What a shaker door is

A shaker door is five pieces — two stiles, two rails and a flat panel that sits recessed inside them. It is the plainest five-piece door there is, which is exactly why it has outlasted every trend since the 1840s: there is no moulding to date it, no carving to collect grease, and it reads as either traditional or modern depending entirely on what you put around it.

The differences between the shaker doors below are the width of the frame and the treatment of the inside edge. A narrow frame reads contemporary; a wide one reads traditional. A square inside edge is the most severe, a bevel or a cove softens it. On a run of cabinets those few millimetres are most of the character of the kitchen, which is why it is worth looking at several rather than assuming a shaker is a shaker.

The honest part

What you are accepting

The flat panel is the easiest door to keep clean and the hardest to make interesting. In a small kitchen with little cabinetry it can read as plain rather than restrained, and the fix is usually the frame width or the finish rather than a different profile.

If you are painting, be aware that a five-piece shaker in solid wood has four joints across the face, and wood moves seasonally. Over years that movement shows as fine lines at the joints. It is not a defect and it is why painted doors are commonly built on MDF or HDF instead.

US Cabinet Depot Shaker White cabinet door — a clean bright white five-piece shaker with a flat recessed centre panel and a square frame

Shaker White

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

The plainest, brightest white in the range and the one most people picture when they say shaker. No warmth in it at all, which makes it the safest partner for a cool grey or white quartz.

Request a Shaker White sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Antique White cabinet door — a warm creamy off-white shaker door with a flat recessed centre panel

Shaker Antique White

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A warm cream rather than a white. It sits comfortably against oak floors, brass hardware and anything with beige in it, and it fights with a cool white countertop.

US Cabinet Depot Shaker Dove cabinet door — a soft warm greige shaker door with a flat recessed centre panel

Shaker Dove

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

The greige in the range — a pale grey with enough warmth to stop it reading cold. The most forgiving colour here if you have not chosen the countertop yet.

Request a Shaker Dove sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Grey cabinet door — a mid-tone neutral grey shaker door with a flat recessed centre panel

Shaker Grey

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A true mid grey with no blue or green in it. Dark enough to read as a colour rather than a neutral, which makes it a common choice for an island under lighter perimeter cabinets.

Request a Shaker Grey sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Ivy cabinet door — a deep muted forest green painted shaker door with a flat recessed centre panel

Shaker Ivy

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

The darkest colour in the range short of black, and a green with enough grey in it that it reads almost neutral in a dim room and unmistakably green against white. A common choice for a lower run under pale wall cabinets.

US Cabinet Depot Shaker Cinder cabinet door — a dark charcoal-brown stain over birch with the wood grain visible through the finish

Shaker Cinder

ShakerFull overlayStained solid birch frame, veneered centre panel

Charcoal with brown underneath it, and the grain still showing through — this is stained wood rather than paint, so it reads as a dark timber instead of a dark surface.

Request a Shaker Cinder sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Black cabinet door — a deep near-black painted shaker door with a flat recessed centre panel

Shaker Black

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A flat near-black. Striking on a base run or an island, and unforgiving about dust and fingerprints in a way the mid tones are not.

Request a Shaker Black sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Navy cabinet door — a deep blue painted shaker door with a flat recessed centre panel

Shaker Navy

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A deep, slightly muted navy. The one colour in the range that carries a whole kitchen without needing a second cabinet colour to break it up.

Request a Shaker Navy sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Honey cabinet door — a light golden wheat-toned stain over wood with straight open grain clearly visible

Shaker Honey

ShakerFull overlayStained solid birch frame, veneered centre panel

A pale golden stain with the grain running clearly through it. The lightest of the wood finishes and the one that reads most contemporary against a white countertop.

Request a Shaker Honey sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Essence Oak cabinet door — a warm golden rift-sawn oak shaker door with straight tight grain running vertically through the frame and panel

Shaker Essence Oak

ShakerFull overlaySolid rift-sawn oak frame, veneered centre panel

Rift-sawn oak, cut on an angle to the growth rings so the grain runs straight and tight instead of arching into cathedrals. That is why this reads calm where a plain-sawn oak reads busy, and it is the only oak in the US Cabinet Depot range. The plywood box is finished in matching rift oak.

Request a Shaker Essence Oak sample
US Cabinet Depot Shaker Unfinished cabinet door — a raw pale birch shaker door with no stain or topcoat and the natural grain fully exposed

Shaker Unfinished

ShakerFull overlayUnfinished solid birch frame, veneered centre panel

Raw birch with no stain and no topcoat, meant to be finished after it is hung. Worth it when you are matching an existing colour exactly or want a hand-applied finish — but it buys you a painter and a schedule rather than a delivery date, and the box arrives unfinished to match.

US Cabinet Depot Edgeline White cabinet door — a bright white shaker door with an unusually narrow frame around a flat recessed panel

Edgeline White

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

The same idea as a shaker with the frame cut right back. That narrow stile is the whole point: it makes a white kitchen read modern rather than traditional without going to a slab door.

Request a Edgeline White sample
US Cabinet Depot Oxford White cabinet door — a bright white five-piece door with a wide angled bevel around a flat recessed panel

Oxford White

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A white shaker with a wide angled bevel running inside the frame, so there is a soft shadow line where a plain shaker has a hard edge. Slightly more traditional, and it photographs better.

Request a Oxford White sample
US Cabinet Depot Oxford Cashmere cabinet door — a warm putty greige painted door with a wide angled bevel around a flat recessed panel

Oxford Cashmere

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A warm putty — more beige than grey, and a clear step deeper than any of the off-whites. It is the colour that stops a kitchen reading stark without committing it to an actual colour.

Request a Oxford Cashmere sample
US Cabinet Depot Oxford Sage cabinet door — a muted grey-green painted door with a wide angled bevel around a flat recessed panel

Oxford Sage

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A muted grey-green, well short of a true green. It works with warm brass and with white oak, and it is the one colour here that dates a kitchen if the rest of the room fights it.

Request a Oxford Sage sample
US Cabinet Depot Oxford Mist cabinet door — a grey-taupe finish over birch with the wood grain showing through a brushed glaze

Oxford Mist

ShakerFull overlayStained solid birch frame, veneered centre panel

Not a paint and not quite a stain. A greige base on birch with a brushed glaze wiped back over it to expose the grain, repeated until the depth is right — so the wood reads through a grey.

Request a Oxford Mist sample
US Cabinet Depot Oxford Toffee cabinet door — a warm tan stain over birch with strong visible grain and a wide bevelled frame

Oxford Toffee

ShakerFull overlayStained solid birch frame, veneered centre panel

A warm mid-tan with the grain doing most of the work. Because it is real wood under a stain, colour and figure vary door to door — that is the material, not a mismatch.

Request a Oxford Toffee sample
US Cabinet Depot Haven Dune cabinet door — a soft warm off-white painted door with a pillowed bevel around a flat recessed centre panel

Haven Dune

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

A quiet off-white with just enough warmth to avoid looking clinical. The Haven bevel is rounded rather than cut square, so the shadow inside the frame is a soft gradient instead of a hard line and the whole door reads gentler than a plain shaker.

Request a Haven Dune sample
US Cabinet Depot Haven Sage cabinet door — a soft grey-green painted door with a pillowed bevel around a flat recessed centre panel

Haven Sage

ShakerFull overlayPainted HDF

The same grey-green as Oxford Sage: sampled from the manufacturer’s own photographs the two colours are indistinguishable. So choose between them on the frame, not the paint — Haven’s bevel is pillowed and soft, Oxford’s is a wide hard angle.

Request a Haven Sage sample
US Cabinet Depot Haven Ember cabinet door — a dark greyed-brown stain over birch with the grain showing through and a pillowed bevel

Haven Ember

ShakerFull overlayStained solid birch frame, veneered centre panel

A dark greyed brown — warmer than charcoal, cooler than walnut. Because it is stained wood rather than paint the grain reads through the colour, and the manufacturer notes plainly that grain and shading vary from door to door.

Wellborn Forest Monterey cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a shaker door with a fine stepped edge around the recessed panel

Monterey

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

A shaker with a fine step machined around the panel opening, so the panel sits in a shallow frame-within-a-frame. Subtle in a photograph and clearly visible in the room.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Cherry, Hickory, Quartersawn White Oak

Wellborn Forest Auburn Plains cabinet door in maple with a clear wheat finish — a minimal flat panel door with a very fine recessed line

Auburn Plains

ShakerFull overlay

Nearly a slab. A single fine line marks the panel and there is no frame relief to speak of, which makes it the most modern five-piece door in the range. No cherry, and no five-piece drawer front.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Quartersawn White Oak

Wellborn Forest Destin cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a shaker door with a soft cove around the flat recessed panel

Destin

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

A shaker softened by a shallow cove where the frame meets the panel. It takes a glaze well, because there is somewhere for the glaze to sit.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Cherry, Quartersawn White Oak

Wellborn Forest Boston cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a five-piece door with a coved inner frame edge and a flat recessed panel

Boston

Wellborn Forest Hamilton cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a flat recessed panel door with a stepped and coved frame edge

Hamilton

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

Wellborn Forest Outer Banks cabinet door in maple with a clear wheat finish — a shaker door with a defined square step around the recessed panel

Outer Banks

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

A shaker with a crisp square step around the panel rather than a cove — a cleaner shadow line, and one of the newer additions to the catalogue.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Cherry, Hickory, Quartersawn White Oak

Wellborn Forest Santa Fe cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a shaker door with a stepped bevel around the flat recessed panel

Santa Fe

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

A stepped bevel runs around the panel, giving two shadow lines instead of one. Available in six species and it has a raised-panel sibling if you want the same frame with a shaped centre.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Cherry, Hickory, Quartersawn White Oak

Wellborn Forest Chesapeake cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a five-piece door with a vertical beadboard centre panel

Chesapeake

ShakerFull overlay

The only beadboard door in either range — vertical beads machined into the centre panel instead of a flat field. Cottage and coastal kitchens, and a genuine nuisance to dust.

Available in Oak, Maple, Cherry

Wellborn Forest Waverly cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a slim-framed shaker with a shallow step around the recessed panel

Waverly

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

A slim-framed flat panel available in all seven species including both rustics — which makes it the usual choice when someone wants a plain door in rustic hickory.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Cherry, Hickory, Rustic Hickory, Quartersawn White Oak

Wellborn Forest Hartford cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a wide-framed flat panel door with an angled inner bevel

Hartford

ShakerFull overlay5-piece drawer option

A wide flat-panel door with an angled bevel inside the frame, and one of only two styles offered in rustic maple. No MDF option, so this one is not available as a standard paint.

Available in Oak, Maple, Cherry, Rustic Maple

Wellborn Forest Devon cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a half overlay flat panel door with a stepped bevel, showing the face frame around it

Devon

Shaker1/2" overlay5-piece drawer option

The half-overlay flat panel, and the one that shows the most face frame. If you want cabinetry that reads as furniture rather than as a continuous wall of doors, this is where to start.

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF, Hickory, Rustic Hickory

Wellborn Forest Pima cabinet door in maple with a wheat stain — a half overlay door with a coved frame around a recessed centre panel

Available in Oak, Maple, MDF

Door front photography is supplied by the manufacturers and is representative of the profile and the finish, not of a specific door. Wood species vary in grain and colour from piece to piece — the rustic species deliberately so — and printed and on-screen colour never matches a finished door exactly. Order a sample door before you commit to a kitchen.

Put one in your hand

A door front in your hand under your own kitchen lights tells you more than any screen will. We keep samples of both lines at the Granby showroom — bring a countertop chip and a photo of the room and we will put them together.
